With the New Year fast approaching, we’re celebrating 2016’s biggest hair and beauty trends including beautiful balayage hair, peekaboo nails and lots and lots of glitter.Relive the last year and rediscover the trends that stood out over the past twelve months.
The ‘Lob’ hairstyle
The long bob, or ‘lob’, has been a huge hit amongst celebrities throughout 2016. This sophisticated, wearable hairstyle is perfect for all hair types and face shapes, which may be why it’s been such a popular trend throughout the last year. With famous faces such as Khloe Kardashian and Rihanna showcasing this fabulous look, we’re not surprised that this standout style has been a firm favourite amongst both stylists and clients.
2016 has been the year of the matte lip. With famous faces such as Kylie Jenner and Megan McKenna flaunting their own matte lip kit ranges, this trend has taken the beauty world by storm. Not only is the matte lip the height of fashion, it is also long lasting and wearable, guaranteeing a perfected lip look all day long. We love Sleek MakeUP’s matte me liquid lipsticks as they offer a range of vibrant colours and are a great, affordable way to achieve this popular look.
Peekaboo nails have been a hit throughout the last year. Whether it’s a contrasting colour or an eye-catching shimmer of glitter, adding detail beneath the nail is guaranteed to transform your client’s manicure and create a unique look that they’ll love. This bold trend has been huge on social media and we’re sure the Peekaboo manicure will make an appearance in 2017.
Sparkling their way through 2016, glitter lips were a huge trend at every festival this summer and the vibrant lip look also made appearances on the catwalk. Model sisters Gigi and Bella Hadid showed off the gorgeous look at Milan Fashion Week this September, walking for major designer Fendi. Fun yet fashionable, this trend is surprisingly versatile and can be worn during the summer season at festivals or on holiday but can also be dressed up for a statement night out look.
More subtle than ombre, Balayage provides a beautiful, soft highlighted look that will transform hair and provide body and texture. 2016 saw the return of this sophisticated hair colour trend, with celebrities such as Suki Waterhouse and Jessie Alba flaunting their Balayage look. For laidback, supermodel cool, this colour technique is a great choice for clients and we’re certain Balayage will be even more prominent throughout 2017.

Contouring took over the world of make-up during 2015 but highlighting seems to have been the pinnacle of 2016, with every beauty lover showing off perfectly highlighted cheek bones and a gorgeous glow. Highlighting is great for accentuating your client’s facial features and adds a fresh, healthy glow to any make-up look. Sleek MakeUP’s Solstice highlighting palette is the perfect addition to any make-up kit and will provide clients with a soft yet noticeable shimmer, great for special occasions. This palette is also great to retail within your business to ensure your clients can carry their highlighted look through to 2017.
The classic braid has always been a failsafe hair look that’s practical but also looks put together. However, 2016 saw this hair trend rise in the popularity stakes, with celebrities such as Kim Kardashian and Cara Delevigne showing off braided looks. A firm favourite at festivals, braids were restyled this year with the addition of hoops and studs for an edgier look. We also saw many braided styles on the red carpet as stars such as Katy Perry decided to swap sleek, up-dos for a cooler, laidback braided style. A constant within the hair industry, it’s unlikely that braids will ever disappear and we predict they’ll be just as popular in the upcoming spring and summer seasons.
