The hair evolution of Rihanna

Three years after releasing her debut album Music of the Sun, Rihanna took control and swapped her girl next door look for a more mature, daring image. Instead of her classic beachy, waist-length waves, Rihanna sported a stylish, asymmetrical bob, a look that proved popular with fans and catapulted the star into the spotlight.

2009 saw Rihanna crop her hair into a short, pixie cut. The star also decided to switch things up by colouring her short do, swapping her classic black look for a caramel blonde shade. With shaved sides and a heavy, sweeping top, 2009 was an experimental year for Rihanna, not only with her image but also her music.

Possibly her most daring look to date, Rihanna’s red locks signify the height of her fame as the star’s album Loud was a number one hit in the UK, Ireland and Canada. Thanks to RiRi herself, this vivid red shade became one of the most highly requested colours of the year as everyone wanted to channel the singer’s vibrant look.

Rihanna said goodbye to her famous red hair in 2011 and, instead, showed off bright, blonde curls with heavy roots. The star later enhanced the blonde shade by lighening her hair and showcasing a classic platinum blonde do.

Alongside the release of her seventh studio album, the star also unveiled a new hairstyle. This time, Rihanna showed off gorgeous, ombre waves, with one shaved side to add an edge to her look.

Leading up to the release of her hit album Anti, Rihanna opted for simple but sleek, raven locks. Never one to keep the same look for too long, the singer continued to change her hair length and style, as 2016 also saw Rihanna show off the much coveted ‘lob’, as well as Bantu knots and 90s-esque crimped hair.

Towards the end of 2016, Rihanna drastically changed her style as she displayed waist-length dread locks that perfectly complimented her laid-back, edgy look.
