Self care tips for busy salon owners

With clients to treat and staff to manage, salon owners are often guilty of neglecting their own needs, leaving little time to unwind and relax.

Reports show that in the past year, 74% of people have been so stressed that they’ve felt overwhelmed and unable to cope, a statistic that proves how important it is for salon owners and staff to take regular time out for themselves. Although this is sometimes easier said than done, here are a few tips to help you take care of yourself and your team.

Training is key

Every salon owner knows that training is an essential part of staff development, also allowing your business to flourish as you extend your treatment menu. Although it’s great to have a speciality, make sure your team are trained up to your level and can offer clients all of the services you can. This will take the pressure of you and free up your time for other commitments, such as admin and ordering stock, as well as allow you to take a well-deserved break.

Plan ahead

It’s not always easy but try to plan your holidays in advance. This not only allows your team to prepare for your absence but also gives you something to look forward to and work towards.

Staff only space

It’s essential that your salon has a ‘client-free’ zone, specifically for staff to use. This could be for team meetings, lunches or simply for a quick five minute time-out during a day of back-to-back appointments. Ensure the decor is inviting and comfortable and encourage your staff to take time out if needed.

Be nosy

As a beauty professional, it’s your job to make people feel great but remember to treat yourself too! Why not book yourself into a spa or salon for a treatment and, while you’re there, use the time to do some competitor research while you unwind. Seeing how other businesses work is great motivation to improve your own business, which is sometimes needed when you’re feeling especially stressed or under pressure.
