The New Year is often the perfect motivation for hair and beauty professionals, encouraging them to develop their existing skills and take on further training. Since taking an interest in all things beauty at an early age, St.Tropez’s Global Training and Education manager Jayne Cooper always dreamed of becoming a trainer for a premium brand. Thanks to years of hard work and a variety of vital training and experience, Jayne is now classed as a ‘Tanning Expert’ throughout the industry and has worked on a number of exciting projects, from delivering presentations at huge exhibitions to tanning celebrities.
We spoke to Jayne about her career journey, her exciting role as part of the UK’s leading tanning brand and what advice she’d offer to those hoping to succeed in the often competitive beauty industry.
How did you first become interested in beauty and the beauty industry itself?
I was always interested in beauty from a young age, exploring skincare and make-up as a teenager. After leaving school, I decided I wanted to do something that I loved which is why I decided to go into the beauty industry. As soon as I started, I knew this was the right path for me. I loved making people feel relaxed and enjoyed giving clients confidence through my treatments.
How did your studies and experience help you get to where you are today?
Training and experience was key to where I am now in my career. After qualifying as a Beauty Specialist, I continued my training, attending every course possible to gain as many qualifications and skills as I could. This included the St.Tropez spray tanning course.
Back in college, everyone would discuss which route they planned on taking, whether that be cruise ships or working in a spa or salon. My goal was to become a trainer for a premium brand. After years of working in salons, I started my teacher training. I initially began volunteering in a college, taking on a couple of classes per week, and was then offered a Beauty Lecturers position, an opportunity which enabled me to develop new teaching skills and experience.
Eventually, an Education and Events Specialist position came up at St.Tropez, a role I’d been working towards since I started off in the industry. I applied and have now been working for St.Tropez for nine years, growing and learning all the time.
What do you enjoy the most about your job?
I love the variety that my role offers – every day is different. One day, I could be training our salons team, the next I’ll be attended PR events or tanning celebs, it really keeps me on my toes. I’ve attended events I never imagined I’d end up going to and have met some amazing people. I’m always getting pushed out of my comfort zone which keeps me learning all of the time.
What challenges do you face within your role?
Because my role is so varied, I work across a number of departments. My diary can change from day to day so it’s essential that I’m very flexible. I also need to be willing to travel and self-motivation is a must.
What advice would you give to anyone hoping to pursue a career in the beauty industry?
Never stop learning! Always keep up with the trends and train as often as possible as the industry is constantly changing. Follow your passions and, most importantly, do something you love.
