The thriving beauty industry offers great opportunity, with an array of roles on offer. Whether you’d like to work within a salon or spa as a beauty therapist or venture into other beauty related areas such as buying, training or management, there are a host of positions on offer. Ellisons’ Head Trainer, Annette Farrington-Moore has had a varied career in the Hair, Beauty and Fashion industry, before joining Ellisons and being responsible for teaching the wide range of courses we have on offer at our Academy. We caught up with Annette to find out how her career has developed and what she enjoys most about her role.
How did you first become interested in beauty and the beauty industry?
I’ve always had an interest in beauty, and so whilst working my way up in the banking industry I spent my evenings and weekends working as an image and style consultant and makeup artist. Whilst in this role I found that my clients would often ask me for facials and waxing, so I decided to train as a beauty therapist. After completing my training I left my job at the bank and became a full time salon owner. After a successful stint owning a salon I was headhunted to teach at a local college. It was here that I gained my teaching experience which helped me to move on and become the Head Trainer at Ellisons.
How did your studies and experience help you get where you are today?
My varied career in the beauty industry has really helped me with my training role at the Ellisons Academy. Opening myself up to so many different situations has meant that when students have queries or apprehensions, I can draw upon my own experiences and really help them to be the best that they can be. Through college courses, teaching and other work experience, I have gained a lot of industry knowledge and know what works and what doesn’t. This helps me every day in my job.
What do you enjoy the most about your job?
There are so many things that I enjoy about my job. I love the variety that it brings for starters; different students walk through the Academy doors every single day and no day is ever the same. I also love watching the people that I meet progress. It gives me great job satisfaction to see them learn and grow from my teaching.
What challenges do you face within your role?
When working so closely with people, there are likely to be a few challenges. Sometimes students don’t show up and the format of the day needs to be changed, however I’ve learnt to think on my feet and I’ve realised that there is always a solution to any challenge.
What advice would you give to anyone hoping to pursue a career in the beauty industry?
There are so many different directions that you can go in the beauty industry and it can be quite competitive so my advice would be to gain as many qualifications as you can and be open to learning something new. The beauty industry is huge but once you’re in, it is so rewarding.
