It can be hard making it in the beauty industry and that’s why Ellisons want to bring you inspirational people who have made a living out of nails, beauty or hair. We caught up with Sophie the founder and owner of Glazed Nails and Beauty to find out how she went from doing nails in her bedroom to owning a salon which employs 5 staff members and offers a whole host of nail and beauty treatments.
How did you first become interested in beauty and the beauty industry?
I first had the idea to start doing nails when I was at university doing a degree in fashion, a couple of the girls on my course would always have their nails done and it really made me think about offering a nail service myself. I used my spare time whilst studying to research nail techniques and designs and then as part of my final project at University I did a nail based piece.
How did your studies and experience help you get to where you are today?
I started off by combining a lot of research with a professional nail qualification, this gave me some basic knowledge. When I first started out I was doing nails in my bedroom, I was lucky that I had a lot of interest and people willing to allow me to practice on them, this meant that with lots of trial and error I was able to get to where I am today. Fast forward 5 years and I’ve trained in tanning, waxing and lots of other courses and a loyal client base means that I run a successful salon employing 5 therapists!
What do you enjoy the most about your job?
There is loads that I love about my job but one of the main things is getting to be really creative and create a different nail look every day. Having so many different clients means that I get to do lots of techniques and use a whole host of products. Having a good reputation also means that I get to meet a lot of different people as I am always getting recommended which is really fun.
What challenges do you face within your role?
I don’t face many challenges in my role but I often find that I need to be strict on myself and keep a healthy work and home life balance, especially as I have a two year old at home. It was important to me to take on new staff members and train them in the Glazed way so that I didn’t have to turn clients away but could also spend time with my family.
What advice would you give to anyone hoping to pursue a career in the beauty industry?
Be prepared to work hard and put the hours in, don’t expect success over night. I would also say to research products and techniques and always keep up to date with the trends as these change all the time. Networking is a great way to make yourself known in the industry and is a great way to get tips that work for other people.
